What to see and do in Fuentealbilla

Fuentealbilla
Village
Fuentealbilla is a municipality in the comarca of La Manchuela, in the province of Albacete, comprising the settlements of Fuentealbilla, Bormate and Campoalbillo, at an average altitude of 680 metres. Its name derives from the Latin albus because of the whitish waters of some salt pans worked from Roman times until the 1990s; from that period a 3rd-century Roman cistern survives in the area known as the Fuente Grande, next to which stands today a fountain with a central column and several spouts. Reconquered in 1212 by Alfonso VIII, it was part of the Estado de Jorquera, dependent on the Señorío de Villena, and passed in 1833 from the province of Cuenca to that of Albacete. Its parish church is dedicated to Santiago el Mayor, and it is the birthplace of the footballer Andrés Iniesta.

Salt marshes of Fuentealbilla
Nature
Old salt works exploited from Roman times until the 1990s, whose whitish waters gave the municipality its name, derived from the Latin albus, white. The Roman settlement itself was probably due to these salt works, given the great value of salt in antiquity; according to Madoz's dictionary, in the mid-19th century some 4,000 to 5,000 arrobas of good-quality water-salt were produced there annually.

The Roman head of Fuentealbilla
Curiosity
In 2008, a farmer ploughing in the municipal area of Fuentealbilla found a stone-carved human head from the Roman period, estimated to have been carved in the 3rd century; in accordance with heritage legislation, the piece was handed over to the Museo Arqueológico de Albacete, where it is kept today. Other remains of two ancient settlements have also been found in the municipality, including a stone horse's head and an Arab coin.
