At the site of Las Raíces, in a forest of Canary pines and eucalyptus in the Monte de la Esperanza, a semi-secret meeting was held on 16 or 17 June 1936 between Tenerife's principal military commanders and General Franco, then commander general of the Canary Islands, at which the final plans were laid for the coup that a month later triggered the Civil War. A commemorative monument was erected there in 1956; it was demolished in 2015 by the Tenerife Cabildo under the Historical Memory Law, and replaced by a park with no glorification of either side.
