What to see and do in Tuineje

Tuineje
Village
A municipality in southeastern Fuerteventura, which became independent of Betancuria in the late 18th century and was established as a municipality by the Cortes of Cádiz in 1812. Its coast includes the settlements of Gran Tarajal, Tarajalejo, Giniginámar and Las Playitas.
Batallas de El Cuchillete y Tamasite (1740)
Historical milestone
During the War of Jenkins' Ear, English corsairs landed from the sloop Vernon were defeated twice by the Majorero popular militia: on 13 October 1740 at the battle of El Cuchillete, near Gran Tarajal, with 33 of the 53 attackers killed, and on 24 November of the same year at the battle of Tamasite, on the Llano Florido, next to the mountain that gives it its name.
Faro de Punta de la Entallada
Monument
A lighthouse built between 1953 and 1954 on a 200-metre cliff near Las Playitas, first lit on the night of 3 December 1954. Designed by the architect Carlos Alcón with a U-shaped plan and three square towers, its architectural design is unlike any other in the whole Canary archipelago, and it marked the east coast between the lighthouses of Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable.
Horno de cal de Gran Tarajal
Monument
Built in 1953, it is the largest surviving lime kiln on Fuerteventura, evidence of a craft activity essential to traditional building on the island.
Ermita de San Marcos
Monument
A hermitage from the late 17th century located in Tiscamanita, one of the oldest rural churches surviving in the municipality of Tuineje.
Monumento Natural de Caldera de Gairía y Cuchillos de Vigán
Nature
Protected natural areas inland in Tuineje that each preserve a volcanic formation: a well-preserved explosion crater at Gairía and an eroded relief of sharp ridges ("cuchillos") at Vigán, both within the Parque Rural de Betancuria.
