What to see and do in Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario
Village
The capital of Fuerteventura since 1860, established as an independent municipality on 1 February 1835. It was known as Puerto de Cabras until 1956, when it was renamed Puerto del Rosario.
De Puerto de Cabras a Puerto del Rosario (1956)
Historical milestone
On 16 March 1956 the Council of Ministers approved changing the name of Puerto de Cabras to Puerto del Rosario, as the original place name was considered "a permanent affront that invites ridicule" and a source of humiliation for its townspeople.
Casa Museo de Unamuno
Curiosity
The philosopher and writer Miguel de Unamuno lived in this house during his exile on Fuerteventura in 1924, ordered by the Primo de Rivera dictatorship; it now operates as a house-museum dedicated to him and to that episode.
Ecomuseo de La Alcogida
Monument
A reconstruction of an 18th- and 19th-century rural Majorero hamlet in the village of Tefía, inhabited until the 1970s and restored by the Fuerteventura Cabildo in 1992. It brings together seven traditional dwellings that display the island's domestic architecture; its name refers to the land used for collecting rainwater.
Reserva de la Biosfera de Fuerteventura
Historical milestone
UNESCO declared the whole of Fuerteventura, together with its surrounding waters, a Biosphere Reserve on 26 May 2009, at the 21st session of the International Coordinating Council of the MaB programme held on the South Korean island of Jeju. The reserve covers 353,500.6 hectares, just over half of them marine, and recognises the sustainable management of a territory with scarce resources; this designation is distinct from the World Heritage List.
