What to see and do in Antigua

Antigua
Village
A municipality in central Fuerteventura, already densely populated by the Majos before the conquest, as shown by the remains at La Atalayita. The building of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua in 1785 allowed it to become independent of Betancuria, and it was formally established as a municipality in 1836.
Independencia municipal de Antigua (1836)
Historical milestone
The building of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua in 1785 allowed the town to become ecclesiastically independent of Betancuria; the municipality was formally established in 1836.
La Atalayita
Historical milestone
An aboriginal Majo settlement made up of more than a hundred stone structures, one of the largest sites of its kind on Fuerteventura, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2007.
Molino de Antigua
Monument
A former 19th-century gofio mill converted into a centre for Canarian culture and crafts, which retains its original machinery and also houses the Museo del Queso Majorero (Majorero Cheese Museum).
Queso majorero
Food and drink
Queso majorero, made from the milk of the majorera goat (with up to 15% sheep's milk in the cured versions), has held Protected Designation of Origin status since 16 February 1996. Cylindrical in shape, with the characteristic palm-leaf pattern on its rind, it is made in fresh, semi-cured and cured varieties; the Museo del Queso Majorero, at the Molino de Antigua, is dedicated to this product.
Castillo de Fuste
Monument
An old fortification at Caleta de Fuste, on the coast of the municipality of Antigua, built to defend the shoreline against the corsair raids that plagued Fuerteventura for centuries.
Hornos de Cal de la Guirra
Monument
A group of traditional lime kilns in Antigua, evidence of a craft industry that supplied lime for traditional Majorero building work before cement became widespread.
Salinas de El Carmen
Monument
Salt flats on the coast of Antigua that have been worked since 1800, among the oldest on Fuerteventura, combining traditional salt production with a small ethnographic museum devoted to the trade.
Las gavias, agricultura en tierra árida
Curiosity
The gavia is a pre-Hispanic farming system that survived the conquest and is found only on Fuerteventura and Lanzarote: plots enclosed by earth walls ("trastones") that hold back run-off water and the silt carried by floods, making it possible to grow cereals and legumes in a territory with almost no rainfall. The municipality of Antigua, around settlements such as Casillas de Morales, preserves good examples of this agricultural landscape.
