What to see and do in Pájara

Pájara
Village
A municipality in southwestern Fuerteventura that includes practically the whole of the Jandía peninsula. Its parish was consecrated in 1711, the year it became ecclesiastically independent of Betancuria.
La Pared de Jandía
Historical milestone
A dry-stone wall which, according to tradition recorded by the earliest chroniclers, marked the boundary in aboriginal times between the island's two Majo kingdoms, separating Jandía from the rest of Fuerteventura.
Playa de Cofete
Nature
An extensive, unspoilt beach at the southwestern tip of the Jandía peninsula, at the foot of the massif of the same name, hard to reach and battered by strong Atlantic swell; it is one of the most isolated and most photographed spots on Fuerteventura.
Villa Winter
Curiosity
A mansion built between 1946 and 1954 in Cofete by the German engineer Gustav Winter (b. 1893), with thick walls, bricked-up doors, tunnels and a bunker that gave rise to never-proven legends about its supposed use as a Nazi submarine base during the Second World War. The house inspired literary works such as "Fuerteventura" (1999), by Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa, and "El contenido del silencio" (2011), by Lucía Etxebarria.
Pico de la Zarza
Nature
At 813 metres, it is the highest point on Fuerteventura, located in the Jandía massif at the southwestern tip of the island.
Playa del Matorral
Nature
A site of scientific interest covering 115 hectares next to Morro Jable, an important stopover zone for migratory birds, combining an extensive tourist beach with a protected area of great ecological value.
Monumento Natural de Ajuy
Nature
An area protected since 1994 at the coastal hamlet of Ajuy, on the western side of Fuerteventura, for preserving a deposit of ocean sediments and fossils of extinct marine animals of extraordinary scientific interest; its caves, carved out by the waves, rank among the oldest geological sites in the archipelago.
