Munébrega
Village
Munébrega is a municipality in the Comunidad de Calatayud, in the province of Zaragoza, at an altitude of 749 metres; its name comes from the Celtiberian Mundobriga, a settlement that survived through the Roman, Visigothic and Muslim periods. The church of la Asunción, in Mudéjar style and from the 14th century, preserves only the floor plan from that period, with later altarpieces from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Here, around 1310, Juan Fernández de Heredia was born, grand master of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, who brought back from one of his campaigns the carving venerated in the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Mar y de la Cuesta. A fountain on Nueva Street bears an inscription from 1673. It has 351 inhabitants (2025), against 900 in the mid-19th century.
