Villel de Mesa
Village
Villel de Mesa is a municipality of the Señorío de Molina, in the province of Guadalajara, with 163 inhabitants, located in the valley of the river Mesa at 928 metres above sea level. Its origin dates back to the 12th century, when Manrique Pérez de Lara, first lord of Molina, settled the valley after the conquest of the taifa from Alfonso I of Aragón; in 1299 the Funes family, originally from Navarre, seized the area and in 1680 received the title of marquises of Villel. On a crag stands the castle of the Funes, a rock-perched castle that preserves remains of the 15th-century wall; at its foot stand the palace of the marquises of Villel, from the 18th century, and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, from the 16th century, which combines Gothic and Renaissance elements with a Baroque altarpiece.
