What to see and do in Ambel

Ambel
Village
Ambel is a municipality of Campo de Borja, near the Moncayo, with 253 inhabitants. Its castle, on a former Muslim site, is documented from 1137; in 1151 Ramon Berenguer IV granted the town and castle to the Templars in exchange for Borja and Magallón, and Ambel became the head of one of their most important commanderies on the Ebro, governed by its own commanders from 1162. After the Templars' suppression, it passed in 1308 to the Order of St John of Jerusalem, dependent on the Castellany of Amposta, which converted the castle into the commandery's palace; in 1778 the Baroque hermitage of Our Lady of the Rosary was also built. Its economy remains tied to the land, with vineyards covered by the Campo de Borja designation of origin, olive and almond groves, and pig and sheep farming.
