What to see and do in Alcalá de Moncayo

Alcalá de Moncayo
Village
Alcalá de Moncayo is a small municipality in the comarca of Tarazona y el Moncayo, in the province of Zaragoza, with 147 inhabitants, set on a hill at 766 metres above sea level over the Huecha river, very close to the Moncayo natural park. Its name comes from the Arabic al-qalat, “the castle,” reflecting its defensive role. In 1238, in the time of James I, the abbot of the nearby monastery of Veruela granted it a founding charter, and the village remained linked to this abbey until the Mendizábal disentailment. The parish church of the Assumption, from the 16th century, with a Mudejar tower and 16th- and 17th-century altarpieces, was built by order of the abbot of Veruela. The village also preserves remains of the wall and the medieval castle.
