Source of the Pitarque River Nature · Pitarque, Maestrazgo, Teruel The natural monument of the Source of the Río Pitarque protects 114 hectares around the source of the river, in the municipality of Pitarque (comarca of Maestrazgo, Teruel), between 1,010 and 1,450 metres in altitude. It was declared as such on 15 December 2009. The water emerges, with a flow of close to 1,500 litres per second, from a karstic aquifer formed in Upper Cretaceous limestone, marl and clay, at a point also known as the Ojo de la Fuente; after heavy rain it can also gush from a nearby chimney, forming a waterfall. The riverside vegetation, with willows and black poplars, gives way on the slopes to Portuguese oaks and box, while the waters are home to common trout and the European otter, and vultures nest and wild goats graze on the limestone cliffs.
