What to see and do in Castelnou

Castelnou
Village
Castelnou is a municipality in the comarca of Bajo Martín, in Teruel, at 201 metres above sea level, situated on the right bank of the río Martín. Its church of the Inmaculada Concepción, from the 18th century, consists of three naves with a barrel vault in the central one and groin vaults in the side ones, and preserves white and blue sgraffito typical of the comarca, with garlands of plasterwork that were originally decorated with gold leaf, although today they are in a poor state of preservation. Following the course of the río Martín are the Cabecico Bajero and Peñafresca, with vestiges of ancient settlements and Iberian pottery decorated with bands and concentric circles. The municipality also preserves the Venta del Fraile or de Valimaña, a group of monastic outbuildings on the old road of the Catalans.
Festivities of Castelnou
Activity
Summer festivities of Castelnou, traditionally dedicated to Saint Roch, celebrated on the second weekend of August. The tradition had stopped being celebrated for some years until, in 1995, the La Valera Cultural Association revived it. Until a few years ago they were preceded by a cultural week, and since the association disbanded for lack of volunteers, it is the town council that takes charge of organising them.
