What to see and do in Samper de Calanda

Samper de Calanda
Village
Samper de Calanda is a town in the comarca of Bajo Martín, in the province of Teruel, situated at 258 metres above sea level in what is called the Desierto de Calanda, an arid area of scarce rainfall softened by the passage of the río Martín. It has 734 inhabitants, well below the 1,628 it had in the mid-19th century. The village is part of the Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo, a tradition kept alive by the Asociación Cultural Los Tambores, dedicated to spreading and preserving the customs of the drum and the bass drum. In the town, the impressive parish church of El Salvador is preserved.

Calanda Peach Designation of Origin (regional reference)
Curiosity
The Melocotón de Calanda, whose Denominación de Origen includes the Bajo Martín among its producing comarcas, is grown in the south-east of the Ebro depression, between the provinces of Teruel and Zaragoza. It is recognised by its size, uniform yellow colour without streaks, intense aroma and characteristic sweet flavour. The native variety is the Amarillo tardío, along with the Jesca, Evaisa and Calante clones. Its most distinctive technique is the individual bagging of the fruit on the tree, between June and July, with a waxed-paper bag that protects the fruit until harvest. Its cultivation appears in medieval documents and was described in 1895 by the botanist José Pardo Sastrón; the modern expansion, begun in the 1950s, reached a peak of about 3,000 hectares between 1970 and 1980.
