The Val de Zafán railway Historical milestone · La Puebla de Híjar, Bajo Martín, Teruel Image of La Puebla de Híjar, not of the place itself. The Val de Zafán railway, also called the La Puebla de Híjar-Tortosa railway after the valley it ran through, connected the Teruel municipalities of La Puebla de Híjar and Alcañiz with Tortosa, in Tarragona, over 129 kilometres; it was part of a more ambitious project meant to reach San Carlos de la Rápita, which was never completed. On 3 August 1895 the first section, of thirty-two kilometres, was opened between La Puebla de Híjar and Alcañiz; the rest of the line was extended over several decades and did not reach Tortosa until 1942. After years of decline, it was closed in 1973 and its track was removed; today much of its route has been converted into greenways running through the Bajo Aragón and the Terra Alta area of Tarragona. 1895-1973 Photo: Victuallers (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in La Puebla de Híjar
