What to see and do in Peralta de Alcofea

Peralta de Alcofea
Village
Peralta de Alcofea is a municipality of the Somontano de Barbastro, in the province of Huesca, which also groups together the hamlets of El Tormillo and Lagunarrota. In Roman times, in the first half of the 2nd century BC, it was called Petra Alta and served as a fort to supply the Roman troops on the road from Monzón to Zaragoza; from that period remain a 180-metre dam and the hollows known as cías, used to store grain beneath the present-day hamlet. In 1099 King Pedro I gave the town to the church of Alquézar, and from 1179 it formed part of the abadiado of Casbas. In 1975 a necropolis with pottery and mosaics was discovered on the bank of the Alcanadre, belonging to the Ibero-Roman settlement that had occupied the site. It celebrates its main festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción from the third Saturday of August.
