Berbegal
Village
Berbegal is a municipality of the Somontano de Barbastro, province of Huesca, raised on a rock between the Cinca and Alcanadre rivers, with 321 inhabitants. Its origin is Roman, linked to the road that joined Ilerda with Osca, and it is documented from 1 May 1174, when Alfonso II de Aragón ceded its churches, together with those of Pertusa, to the bishop of Huesca. In 1409 King Martín I de Aragón granted the place, with its hamlets, to Pedro de Torrellas. The village preserves the Romanesque church of Santa María la Blanca, stretches of the old Roman road, wells, cisterns and excavated wine cellars, and two monoliths known as the Peñón de Muyed and the Peñón de Santa Águeda. Its economy, traditionally agricultural, is complemented today by pig, poultry and cattle farms and a small industrial estate.
