What to see and do in Barbuñales

Barbuñales
Village
Barbuñales is a municipality in the comarca of Somontano de Barbastro, in the province of Huesca, situated on a plain to the left of the río Alcanadre. It was the birthplace, in 1742, of Félix de Azara, a military officer and engineer who spent twenty years travelling through Paraguay and the Río de la Plata and described 448 animal species, observations later cited by Darwin; on retiring, he returned to live in his house in Barbuñales, where his brother José Nicolás de Azara, a diplomat and collector, was also born. It preserves the parish church of San Lorenzo, from 1666 and in Baroque style, with the Azara family chapel, as well as the fountain of las Calzadas, from 1571. Goya even painted his portrait. It has around 93 inhabitants.

The birth of Félix de Azara
Historical milestone
Félix de Azara was born in Barbuñales on 18 May 1742, son of the feudal lord of Lizana Alejandro de Azara and brother of the bishop of Barcelona Eustaquio and the diplomat José Nicolás. A soldier trained in Barcelona, he served in the Infantry Regiment of Galicia and was wounded in the expedition against Algiers; in 1781 he left for South America to delimit, under the Treaty of San Ildefonso, the borders between the Spanish and Portuguese possessions, a mission that was meant to last a few months and stretched to twenty years, mostly in Paraguay. With no scientific training and guided only by a translation of Buffon, he spent that time observing mammals and birds and described 448 species, half of them unknown; Darwin later cited his observations and Goya painted his portrait. He died in Barbuñales in 1821.
