What to see and do in Lanaja

Lanaja
Village
Lanaja is a municipality in Los Monegros, in Huesca, beside the Barranco de los Paúles, a tributary of the Flumen, 17 kilometres from Sariñena and 61 from Zaragoza; it also includes Cantalobos and Orillena. It has 1,189 inhabitants (2022 INE). Its municipal area holds sites ranging from the Neo-Eneolithic to Roman times, among them La Malena, a Romanised Iberian settlement, with pottery from the early Iron Age and coins from Caesaraugusta. The Christian reconquest is dated to around 1115, and shortly after, James I of Aragon granted Lanaja to the Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, based at the Monastery of Sigena, on which it depended entirely; tithes were paid in a granary next to the church of the Assumption. It is also home to the Charterhouse of Monegros, from the 17th century, with murals by Manuel Bayeu, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 2001.
Charterhouse of Monegros
Monument
The Charterhouse of Monegros, from the 17th century, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2001 (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and is one of the three charterhouses of Aragon, with murals by Manuel Bayeu. The Carthusians of Saint Bruno settled at the site as early as 1507, giving rise to the Charterhouse of the Virgin of the Fountains, in the municipality of Lanaja. Following the Mendizábal disentailment in the 19th century, the property passed into the hands of the House of Bastaras, its current owners, who registered it in the neighbouring municipality of Sariñena in order to benefit from lower taxation.
Church of Lanaja
Monument
Church of la Asunción de María, with two naves: the northern one in Gothic-Cistercian style, probably from the second half of the 13th century, and the southern one from the 14th-15th centuries; it stands on the site of a former mosque, which in turn occupied the place of an early Visigothic church.
Festivities of Lanaja
