What to see and do in Albalatillo

Albalatillo
Village
Albalatillo is a municipality of Huesca province in the comarca of Los Monegros, located six kilometres from Sariñena, at the confluence of the rivers Alcanadre and Flumen, with an economy geared towards agriculture and livestock farming. Its town centre preserves the parish church of San Andrés, from the mid-18th century and in classicist baroque style. Nearby stands the Gothic hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Xarea, from the 14th century, of stone and masonry, which holds inside a sarcophagus with a medieval recumbent sculpture attributed to a knight, possibly the lord of Biota. As in other villages of the comarca, depopulation has led much of its population to emigrate to Zaragoza or Barcelona, leaving the municipality with barely 220 inhabitants.
Church of Albalatillo
Monument
Church of San Andrés de Albalatillo, built in the mid-18th century in classicist Baroque style, with a Latin-cross floor plan with a single nave, a straight chancel and transept, with two Neoclassical side chapels added later and a raised choir; it is built of brick and rammed earth, covered by a lunette barrel vault and a dome on pendentives over the crossing, and has a three-tier bell tower topped with a hemispherical shape. Inside are preserved 18th-century tempera paintings, the work of Gutiérrez and completed in 1756, with garlands and allegories of the virtues on the dome and the four Fathers of the Church on the pendentives. The building was restored between 1989 and 1998 after damage suffered during the Civil War.
