Regional Defense Council of Aragon Historical milestone · Bujaraloz, Los Monegros, Huesca Image of Bujaraloz, not of the place itself. The Durruti Column set up its headquarters in Bujaraloz on 25 July 1936, and on 6 October an assembly of 174 delegates from 139 Aragonese villages met there, giving rise to the Regional Defence Council of Aragon. The body, first legalised and then outlawed by the Second Republic, came to govern the eastern half of Aragon as a virtually independent state, the region's first autonomous government since 1707; its economy rested on agrarian collectives, which controlled prices and prevented inflation. It was born made up solely of CNT anarchists and from December 1936 brought together all the anti-fascist forces of the Popular Front, until the Republican authorities, under communist influence, dissolved it in August 1937. 1936-1937 Photo: Own work (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Bujaraloz
