Steppes of Los Monegros Nature · Bujaraloz, Los Monegros, Huesca Image of Bujaraloz, not of the place itself. The steppes of Los Monegros cover a large part of this Aragonese comarca of 2,764.4 km², shared between Zaragoza and Huesca, with a semi-arid climate, chronic droughts, very hot summers and below-zero winters: one of the most arid areas in Spain. Steppe vegetation spreads over the uncultivated land. The 1999 scientific Manifesto described it as a singular, mature ecosystem, unique in Europe, with more than 5,400 documented biological species and the highest rate of taxonomic novelties on the continent, and called for it to be declared a protected area.
