What to see and do in Benabarre

Benabarre
Village
Benabarre, in the Pre-Pyrenees of Huesca, at 792 metres above sea level between the Ésera and Cajigar rivers, is the historical and cultural capital of Ribagorza and the former capital of its county; it is part of the eastern Franja, where Ribagorçan Catalan is spoken. Reconquered from Islam around 1062, its centre preserves streets of medieval layout, and a kilometre away stands the old Dominican monastery of Nuestra Señora de Linares. The municipality also groups the former villages of Aler, Antenza, Caladrones, Estaña and Pilzán, annexed between 1930 and 1974. Benabarre was the capital of the county of Ribagorza until, in 1591, Philip II forced Count Fernando de Ribagorza, following revolts and civil war, to give it up in exchange for financial compensation, and the territory passed to the Crown.
Castle of Benabarre
Monument
Castle also known as the castle of the Counts of Ribagorza, set along an elongated hill of great height above Benabarre, from which there was visual communication with nearby towns such as Purroy or Pilzán. It rises on a promontory of limestone rock that serves as its foundation, which prevented its walls from being mined — a technique common in the siege of fortresses, consisting of digging a tunnel under the wall to bring it down and open a breach —; it is also surrounded by its own wall, and is reached by stairs protected by a wall. Capital of the former county of Ribagorza until Philip II forced Count Fernando de Gurrea y Aragón in 1591 to renounce it after years of revolts, it was then incorporated into the royal estate; it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2006.
Church of Benabarre
Monument
Parish church of Nuestra Señora de Valdeflores, built in the 19th century. From the church square sets out, on Good Friday at ten at night, the Holy Week procession led by the so-called romanos, whose costume, despite the name, owes more to a Renaissance soldier than to a classical legionary.
Festivities of Benabarre
Activity
Patron saint festival of Benabarre.
The County of Ribagorza passes to the Crown
Historical milestone
After years of revolt and civil war in the county, Philip II forced count Fernando de Gurrea y Aragón in 1591 to renounce it in exchange for compensation; Benabarre, the comital capital, was incorporated into the royal patrimony.
Artisan chocolate of Benabarre
Food and drink
The town preserves a chocolate-making tradition of its own, with cocoa roasted and ground in the old way to make bars and drinking chocolate; it is one of the comarca's products with a recognized identity.
