What to see and do in Valle de Hecho

Valle de Hecho
Village
Valle de Hecho is a municipality in La Jacetania, in the province of Huesca (Aragon), whose seat, the village of Hecho, has outdoor contemporary art and a megalithism interpretation centre. It also comprises Siresa, Embún, Urdués and Santa Lucía, and part of its territory lies within the Parque Natural de los Valles Occidentales and the Paisaje Protegido de las Fozes de Fago y Biniés. In the Selva de Oza is found the greatest concentration of megalithic monuments in the Pyrenees: dolmens and stone circles from 3000 BC, among them the Corona de los Muertos, with 120 stone circles in which up to 5,000 flint pieces have been found. Its surroundings were once the habitat of the last pure Pyrenean brown bears and today shelter reintroduced specimens, as well as bearded vultures and capercaillies.
Museum of Arte Contemporáneo al Aire Libre de Hecho
Monument
Collection of contemporary sculpture spread through the streets of Hecho, begun in the 1970s.
Selva de Oza (Oza Forest)
Nature
The Selva de Oza is an extensive forest of beeches and firs at the head of the Valle de Hecho valley (La Jacetania, Huesca), one of the most emblematic spots in the Aragonese Pyrenees, included within the Parque Natural de los Valles Occidentales and crossed by the Aragón Subordán river, surrounded by peaks of between 2300 and 2700 metres such as Bisaurín or Castillo de Acher. It preserves three dolmens and the remains of a Roman road from the time of Antoninus Pius, also used as a route to Santiago. Alongside the beeches and firs grow yews, maples and birches, and the forest is home to wildlife such as bears, chamois, roe deer and bearded vultures, while the river, rich in trout, flows under a climate of abundant rainfall, with an average annual temperature of 8.1 degrees.
Dolmen of Aguas Tuertas
Nature
Megalithic gallery grave located at 1,600 metres of altitude, at the entrance to the Aguas Tuertas valley, in the Pyrenees of Huesca, within the rich dolmen complex of the western Pyrenees. It is a simple dolmen with a single chamber, formed by three vertical slabs of sandstone and conglomerate and a large capstone measuring 2 by 2.70 metres; its inner chamber measures 2.20 by 0.75 metres. Studies date it to the 3rd millennium BC, at the end of the Eneolithic. No remains of the original tumulus survive. It was first studied by Martín Almagro in the 1940s, and it forms a group with the dolmens of Cardal and Puerto de Escalé.
Megalithic Complex of Guarrinza
Curiosity
Group of dolmens and tumuli in the Guarrinza area, at the head of the Hecho valley (La Jacetania, Huesca), where, together with the Selva de Oza and along the Aragón Subordán river and its tributaries, the highest density of megalithic monuments in the whole Pyrenean range is concentrated. The dolmens and cromlechs of the area date from approximately 3000 BC.
Dolmen of las Peñelas
Nature
Megalithic tomb in the Hecho valley, listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
Megalithism Interpretation Centre of Hecho
Monument
The centre explains the five thousand years of megalithic presence in the Hecho and Ansó valleys, one of the areas with the greatest concentration of megalithic monuments in the whole Pyrenees. In the Selva de Oza, Guarrinza and along the Aragón Subordán river and its tributaries a good part of this heritage is preserved, among which La Corona de los Muertos stands out, a complex with 120 stone circles.
