What to see and do in Roncal/Erronkari

Roncal/Erronkari
Village
Roncal/Erronkari, which gives its name to the whole valley, has 206 inhabitants (INE 2025) spread between the main settlement and the hamlets of Enaquesa and Molino de Garde. Since 2021 it has belonged to the association "Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España" ("The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain"). Uskara, or Roncalese, the valley's own variant of Basque, became extinct during the 20th century with the death of its last speakers.
Iglesia de San Esteban, Roncal
Monument
A parish church in Gothic-Renaissance style from the 16th century, with a nave of chapels between buttresses and a distinctive pentagonal apse.
Julián Gayarre, el tenor de Roncal
Curiosity
Sebastián Julián Gayarre Garjón was born in Roncal on 9 January 1844 into a humble family; he worked as a shepherd from the age of thirteen and as a blacksmith before discovering his voice in the Orfeón Pamplonés choir. After training in Madrid and Milan, he triumphed on 2 January 1876 at La Scala with "La favorita" and became the great tenor of his era, performing in London, Paris, Vienna, and Buenos Aires. He died in Madrid on 2 January 1890, at age 45, of bronchopneumonia resulting from the Russian flu pandemic. His embalmed body rests in a mausoleum in Roncal, the work of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure; his birthplace today houses the Casa-Museo Julián Gayarre (Julián Gayarre House Museum).
Queso de Roncal, denominación de origen
Food and drink
Roncal cheese, made from raw sheep's milk with an intense, robust, slightly piquant flavor, was in 1981 the first Spanish cheese to obtain a denominación de origen (designation of origin), protected at European level since 1996 (EC Regulation 1107/96). Its production area is the Mancomunidad de las Siete Villas (Association of the Seven Towns) of the Roncal valley: Burgui, Garde, Isaba, Roncal, Urzainqui, Uztárroz, and Vidángoz. The valley's livestock-herding and transhumance tradition goes back to grazing rights granted by King Sancho García in the year 882, and today it continues through the Cañada Real (Royal Drove Road) with more than 10,000 head of livestock a year.
