What to see and do in Aragüés del Puerto

Aragüés del Puerto
Village
Aragüés del Puerto is a mountain municipality in the comarca of La Jacetania, in the province of Huesca, at 970 metres of altitude in the valley that gives it its name, a spur of Valle de Hecho. It has 123 inhabitants (INE 2025) and preserves traditional Pyrenean houses, some from the 16th century, as well as the church of the Virgen del Rosario, from the 18th century, and the megalithic dolmen of Lizara. A road leads from the village to the Lizara plains, with a mountain refuge from which cross-country skiing is practised in winter and from which one climbs to Bisaurín peak or to the ibón (glacial lake) of Estanés, on the border with France. Every six years, together with Hecho, Ansó and Jasa, it hosts the PIR Pyrenean music and culture festival. Among the oldest inhabitants a dialect of Aragonese very close to Cheso is still preserved.
Church of Aragüés del Puerto
Monument
The church of Aragüés del Puerto is found in a village whose migas a la pastora are prepared with stale bread fried with garlic, bacon and lamb fat, and in spring usones are added, a mushroom that grows in the valley's pastures.
Aragüés Valley
Nature
The valley of Aragüés is a Pyrenean valley crossed by the Osia river, in the Aragonese comarca of the Jacetania; to the east it connects with the valley of Hecho, to the north with France via the ibón (glacial lake) of Estanés, and to the west, through a pass, with Aísa. It is divided into the villages of Aragüés del Puerto and Jasa, and at the end of the valley rises the peak of Bisaurín, 2,670 metres high. Aragüés del Puerto, at 970 m in the western Pyrenees, occupies a small depression of the valley of Hecho with steep streets and houses dating from the 16th century. Declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), it is one of the least exploited and best preserved valleys of the Aragonese Pyrenees, with mixed beech woods of black pine and fir sheltering griffon vulture, bearded vulture, kite and golden eagle.
