What to see and do in Bailo

Bailo
Village
Bailo is a municipality in the Huesca comarca of La Jacetania, situated in the Canal de Berdún and crossed by the Aragonese Camino de Santiago, which together with the eponymous village groups the settlements of Alastuey, Arbués, Arrés and Larués. Documented since the year 948, it gives its name to the Bailés, a natural and historical district since the 10th century whose territory, on the southern slope of the Aragón river, has historically been a place of passage between peoples and cultures, both a bridge and a military barrier. From this borderland condition survive numerous historic roads and castles, as well as monasteries and mills. Part of its municipal area extends into the Paisaje Protegido de San Juan de la Peña. Its 265 inhabitants live mainly from agriculture.
Church of Bailo
Monument
The church of Bailo, dedicated to San Pedro de la Sede Real and now known as that of San Fructuoso, stands in the centre of this town, documented since the year 948, head of the Bailés, a natural and historic comarca since the 10th century. Bailo was one of the three itinerant seats of the Aragonese court until Ramiro I chose Jaca as the capital, in the early 11th century. The present church, late Gothic with Renaissance elements, was built in the 15th and 16th centuries on the site of the former castle of the kings of Aragon, and was enriched in the 17th and 18th centuries with an important collection of altarpieces. Badly damaged by damp, it was completely restored in 2011. The village now celebrates its main festivities for the Assumption on 15 August.
