Reservoir of la Sotonera Nature · La Sotonera, Hoya de Huesca, Huesca The La Sotonera reservoir was formed by damming the río Sotón to supply the Canal de los Monegros, in the north of the Hoya de Huesca. It also receives waters from the río Astón, which flows into it, and from a diversion of the río Gállego from the Ardisa dam; together with the Mediano reservoir, on the Cinca, it is one of the two supply points for the irrigation of the Monegros, and it also has a small 5 MVA hydroelectric plant. The project began in 1915 with loose materials and abundant local labour, but the works dragged on, amid halts, until it came into service in 1961 and completed its filling in 1968. Now a habitat for waterfowl, turtles and bivalves, it has been recognised as an area of interest by the Sociedad Española de Ornitología since 1987.
