What to see and do in Binaced

Binaced
Village
Binaced is a municipality in Cinca Medio, in the province of Huesca, at an altitude of 279 metres, whose name comes from the Arabic bina' zayd, "building of Zayd", a place name that shares its root with other Aragonese places such as Beceite, Calaceite and Zaidín, pointing to the presence of the Zaydi Shia minority in the area. Besides the settlement of Binaced, the municipality includes the town of Valcarca. Its irrigated market gardens, transformed by the Aragón y Cataluña Canal, have produced onions, artichokes, borage and green beans for the markets of Monzón and Barbastro since the early 20th century. It celebrates its festivals for San Marcos, on 25 April, and for Santa Ana, on 26 July, and is twinned with the French town of Lherm. It now has 1,694 inhabitants.

Irrigated landscape of Binaced
Nature
Binaced, in the Cinca Medio south of Monzón, bases its intensive agriculture on the irrigation of the Canal de Aragón y Cataluña, dominated by fruit trees — peach, pear and apple — and vegetables. The pantano de San Salvador, which covers more than 1,000 hectares between Albalate de Cinca, Belver de Cinca and Binaced itself, is part of this irrigation system.
Bridge over the Sosa in Binaced
Monument
The historic bridge of Binaced, known as el Pontón, actually crosses the Cinca and not the Sosa: it is a structure of medieval origin, from the 13th century, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, which local tradition attributes without evidence to the Romans.

Food and drink
The irrigation brought by the Canal de Aragón y Cataluña turned the dry-farmed land into a garden of onions, artichokes, borage and green beans, which have supplied the markets of Monzón and Barbastro since the beginning of the 20th century.
