What to see and do in Llanera

Llanera
Village
Llanera is a flat Asturian concejo of around 14,020 inhabitants, with its capital at Posada, eleven kilometres from Oviedo. It concentrates much of the comarca's industry in the Silvota and Asipo industrial estates and in the Asturias Technology Park, built at Lugo de Llanera on the site of the Roman Lucus Asturum, as well as an aerodrome between Lugo de Llanera and Posada. Its relief, part of the plain north of Oviedo, barely rises at points such as the Gorfolí peak, its maximum altitude at 582 metres, and is devoted mainly to pasture and cattle farming, with forests of pine, chestnut and oak. The Nora river, which separates it from Oviedo, is its main watercourse. It preserves the church of Santiago de Arlós.
Lucus Asturum
Curiosity
Beneath the present-day Lugo de Llanera, in the Asturian concejo of Llanera, stood Lucus Asturum, a Roman city cited as a mansio in the Ravenna Cosmography and as a polis of the Astures by Ptolemy. It was the junction of the Roman roads of Asturias, with one branch towards Cantabria and another to Astorga via the Vía de la Carisa, and had been inhabited before Rome by the tribe of the luggones; in the 8th century it was taken by the Muslim leader Muza during his advance towards Gijón. Excavations on the site of the old church of Santa María, directed by Carmen Fernández Ochoa, confirmed a Roman presence in the 2nd and 3rd centuries; from there come carved stones, coins, medals and a small bronze figurine, now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Asturias.
Church of Santiago de Arlós
Monument
A single-nave Romanesque church in a barely altered rural setting in the concejo of Llanera, on one of the branches of the Way of St James that ran from Avilés to Las Regueras. It has been dated to 1151, the year in which the bishop of Oviedo, Martín II, donated it to the monastery of San Vicente, although other authors place it as late as the 13th century, as an archaising work related to the churches of Serín, in Gijón, and Valliniello, in Avilés. Built with modest materials typical of rural Asturian Romanesque, it stands out for the sculpted decoration of its doorway, triumphal arch and apse, with capitals carved with plant motifs, knights with falcons, confronted birds and lions. It retains part of its original corbels, although those of the nave were lost in a 19th-century renovation that lowered the walls.
