What to see and do in Campezo/Kanpezu

Campezo/Kanpezu
Village
Municipality of 1,073 inhabitants (2025) and 85.02 km², 38 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz. It is of relatively recent creation: it arose in 1965 from the merger of the former municipalities of Antoñana, Orbiso, Oteo, and Santa Cruz de Campezo, formalized by a decree published in the BOE on 17 August 1965. Santa Cruz de Campezo, its capital with 795 inhabitants, joined the Hermandad General de Concejos Castellanos as early as the 13th century.
Muralla medieval de Antoñana
Monument
Antoñana, a district of the municipality of Campezo, was founded and walled in 1182 by the Navarrese king Sancho VI the Wise. Its wall, between 5 and 12 meters high, was over time incorporated into the houses, which lean against it and are pierced with windows and balconies over the wall itself. The settlement preserves its medieval layout of three main streets almost intact.
Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Ibernalo
Monument
Hermitage built on the site of the depopulated settlement of Ibernal, already mentioned in a charter of 1257, on the slope of the Sierra de Codés at 600 m altitude east of Santa Cruz de Campezo. Of the medieval building only three embedded corbels remain; the current church, remodeled in 1930, preserves the Romanesque bell tower of the old hermitage on its façade and houses a seated image of the Virgin and Child from the 13th-14th centuries.
Tejo singular de Antoñana
Nature
A large specimen of yew tree (Taxus baccata) located next to the Senda del Agin trail, in the area around Antoñana, declared a Singular Tree in 1997. The trail itself takes its name from these centuries-old yews that grow alongside beeches, oaks, and holm oaks in the area.
La fusión municipal de 1965
Historical milestone
The present-day municipality of Campezo was formed in 1965 by the union of the four previously independent municipalities of Antoñana, Orbiso, Oteo, and Santa Cruz de Campezo.
Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de Ibernalo
Activity
Santa Cruz de Campezo celebrates its patron saint festivals on the first weekend of September in honor of the Virgen de Ibernalo: at dawn a romería climbs to the hermitage, a solemn mass is celebrated, and the return to the village is made in procession. On the second Sunday of September, members of the confraternity climb again for the Día de la Cofradía, with mass, the kissing of the foot, and an open-air meal.
Feria de San Martín
Activity
Agricultural and livestock fair considered the most important in the Montaña Alavesa, held in Santa Cruz de Campezo on the second Sunday of November, with a livestock show and craft stalls.
Feria de la Miel de Antoñana
Activity
Fair held in May in Antoñana centered on honey, with a honey quality contest and a culinary competition using this product as the main ingredient.
