What to see and do in Harana/Valle de Arana

Harana/Valle de Arana
Village
Municipality of 212 inhabitants (2025), compared to the nearly 800 it had in 1942, the year it was formed by the merger of three municipalities, with its capital at Alda. Contrasta received a charter from Alfonso X in 1256, while San Vicente de Arana was formed around 1312-1319 by residents fleeing feudal obligations elsewhere. It lies at 812 m in altitude, watered by the Uyarra river, on the border with Navarre.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Elizmendi
Monument
Hermitage of Contrasta whose walls were built partly by reusing Roman tombstones.
Fortaleza de Contrasta
Monument
Old fortress of the district of Contrasta, burned down in 1479 amid the high medieval factional struggles of the valley.
Palacio de los Lazcano de Ullíbarri-Arana
Monument
Manor house built from 1479 onward in the district of Ullíbarri-Arana, linked to the Lazcano lineage.
Cartas fundacionales del Valle de Arana
Historical milestone
Contrasta received the Fuero de Vitoria from Alfonso X in 1256. San Vicente de Arana obtained a founding charter between 1312 and 1319, and in 1326 Alfonso XI granted it the status of independent villa, founded around the pre-existing church of San Vicente.
La fusión municipal de 1942
Historical milestone
The present-day municipality of Valle de Arana (Harana) resulted in 1942 from the union of three earlier municipalities, with its seat in Alda and the districts of Contrasta, San Vicente de Arana, and Ullíbarri-Arana.
Estela discoidal medieval de Irachala
Curiosity
In the Irachala area, within the Valle de Arana, a medieval discoidal stele is preserved, a type of funerary marker found across much of the Montaña Alavesa, alongside the Eneolithic and Bronze Age sites documented at Iturriaga, Salbarte, Pecho Txikito, Lamikela, and Obenkun.
Fiestas de San Vicente de Arana y Contrasta
Activity
San Vicente de Arana celebrates its patron saint festival on 31 August in honor of Saint Emeterius and Saint Celedonius; Contrasta does so on 15 August, the feast of the Virgen de la Asunción. The valley's four districts also share joint festivals on the second weekend of July.
