What to see and do in Añana

Añana
Village
Municipality of 141 inhabitants (2025), considered the oldest villa in Álava: it was founded in 1126 by Alfonso I of Aragon and received a charter from Alfonso VI in 1140. The municipality groups together two settlements, Salinas de Añana (its capital and directly administered center) and Atiega, which retains its own concejo. Naming note: "Salinas de Añana" is only the name of the settlement; the municipality's official name is simply Añana.

Monument
Inland salt works in operation for more than 7,000 years, among the oldest in the world; extraction is documented from the year 822, and it flourished as a salt-trading center during the Middle Ages. It received the Grand Prix of the Jury at the Europa Nostra Awards in 2015, and in 2017 the FAO recognized it as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), the first in Europe.
