Inland salt works in operation for more than 7,000 years, among the oldest in the world; extraction is documented from the year 822, and it flourished as a salt-trading center during the Middle Ages. It received the Grand Prix of the Jury at the Europa Nostra Awards in 2015, and in 2017 the FAO recognized it as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), the first in Europe.
