What to see and do in Fornelos de Montes

Fornelos de Montes
Village
Fornelos de Montes is a mountain concello of around 1,600 inhabitants in the Vigo district, in the province of Pontevedra, resting against the Suído mountain range, whose highest peaks, the Couto Minuto and the Outeiro Vello, reach close to 1,060 and 1,008 metres. The Oitavén, Barragán and Parada rivers flow down through its territory; the first, dammed at the Eiras reservoir, supplies water to Vigo and part of its district. With 2,862 millimetres of rain a year, it is one of the rainiest municipalities in Galicia. In 1906 it reached its historic population record, with 3,047 inhabitants; since then it has been shrinking and ageing as Vigo's industry drew away its workers and agriculture, its main economic sector, lost ground.
Waterfall of Casariños
Nature
A waterfall in the parish of Laxe, in the foothills of the serra do Suído, with a drop of more than twenty-five metres divided into two linked falls and a pool at the bottom; it is one of the most visited waterfalls in Galicia.
The Eiras reservoir and the Oitavén river
Nature
The reservoir that supplies Vigo lies beneath the summits of the Serra do Suído, which exceed a thousand metres. The Oitavén and its tributaries preserve upstream alder groves and very well structured riverside woods.
