What to see and do in Valga

Valga
Village
Valga is a concello of around 6,000 inhabitants in the province of Pontevedra, located on the left bank of the lower course of the Ulla river, beneath Mount Xesteiras, which together with Mount Xiabre closes off the municipality to the south. To the north the broad Ulla valley opens out, into which the Louro and Valga rivers flow in parallel. The climate is mild, with an average temperature of 13 degrees and abundant rainfall exceeding 1,700 mm a year. On 27 April 1809 its residents repelled the French at the battle of Casal do Eirigo, and every 31 August it holds its Festa da Anguía.
Chapel of os Mártores
Monument
A hermitage whose origins local tradition places in the 5th century and which was enlarged in the 17th; it is one of the oldest places of worship in the municipality, raised on the lower Ulla floodplain that separates two provinces.
Petroglyph of Campo Redondo
Monument
A group of Bronze Age carvings also known as the petroglyph dos Penoucos and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection); it occupies a raised outcrop from which the whole Ulla floodplain can be seen.
Viewpoint of Chan do Monte

A rise in the parish of Setecoros from which the Ulla floodplain and, on clear days, the Arousa estuary can be seen; it is one of the municipality's three waymarked viewpoints, along with Campo Redondo and Monte Xesteiras.

Every 31 August the municipality celebrates the eel of the Ulla together with the Mostra da Caña do País, a show devoted to the home-distilled spirit made in the comarca; it combines tastings, a market and music.

A chapel whose original core goes back to the fifth century and which was enlarged in later periods; it is the oldest religious building in the concello and one of the most singular in the lower Ulla.

Festival of 31 August around the eel fished in the lower Ulla, which is served stewed as caldeirada, fried in strips and in a pie, and which recalls the river fishing that for centuries sustained the riverside parishes of the concello. It is accompanied by the Mostra da Caña do País, devoted to homemade spirit.
