What to see and do in Cualedro

Cualedro
Village
Cualedro is a concello in the comarca of Verín, in the province of Ourense, located on the border with the Portuguese town of Montalegre; its name derives from the Latin corylus, hazel. The municipality is split between the granite Sierra de Laroco, which forms the watershed between the Limia and Támega rivers and reaches 1,180 metres at Pico Arando, and a flatter area to the east and southeast watered by the Baldriz and other tributaries of the Búbal. The population, which had grown steadily until the 1960s, later declined due to emigration to Central Europe and major cities. With about 1,540 inhabitants, it preserves the castro of San Millao, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), and along its rivers mills and communal washing places survive.
Hillfort of San Millao
Nature
A fortified settlement declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), beside the mills of the parish of San Millao; it is the main archaeological site of a concello lying at 843 metres above sea level and divided into ten parishes.
Church of Santa María de Atás
Monument
A parish church occupying a central, elevated position above the houses, creating the gathering space that orders the whole settlement; it is one of the most characteristic churches of the concello of Cualedro.
Communal ovens of Cualedro
Curiosity
Every settlement in the concello preserves its communal oven, and those of A Saceda and Vilamaior da Xironda stand out for their slate-slab roofs; they are complemented by a dense network of covered fountains and water troughs.
Mountain range of o Larouco en Cualedro
Nature
The border ridge holds a wind farm of forty-nine turbines within this municipal district; the rivers Baldriz and Pichos run down its slopes, and two groups of flour mills are preserved on them.
Church of San Salvador da Xironda
Monument
Parish church of A Xironda, on the southern edge of Cualedro; through this parish entered the old roads that came from Portugal by Gralhas and Boticas towards the centre of Galicia.
Baldriz River
Nature
Watercourse of the concello of Cualedro on whose banks is preserved one of the two great groups of flour mills of the municipality, in the parish of Santa María das Mercedes, today largely recovered.
Mills of the Pichos river
Curiosity
Row of flour mills stepped along the river Pichos, next to the castro of San Millao; with those of the Baldriz they form the hydraulic heritage of a concello where every hamlet also had its communal oven.
