What to see and do in Trasmiras

Trasmiras
Village
Trasmiras is a concello of around 1,200 inhabitants in the comarca of La Limia, divided into nine parishes over 56.7 km², combining the Limia plains to the west with the mountains of Cualedro to the east, watered by the rivers Limia, Faramontaos and Trasmiras. The territory was inhabited by the Límici tribe, and after Romanisation it fell under the influence of the Forum Limucorum; in the Middle Ages it belonged to the county of Lemos. It preserves several Romanesque churches: that of Santa María de Zos, entirely in this style, with a façade of three archivolts; those of San Juan de Trasmiras and San Salvador de Villar de Liebres, later remodelled; and that of San Martín de Abavides, beside which stands a wayside cross. At Santa María de Escornabois a peto de ánimas is also preserved beside another wayside cross.
Church of Santa María de Zos
Monument
It is the only church in the concello preserved entirely Romanesque, with a façade of three archivolts uncommon in the comarca; those of San Xoán de Trasmiras, San Salvador de Vilar de Lebres and San Martiño de Abavides underwent later alterations.
Church of San Martiño de Abavides
Monument
A church of Romanesque origin much transformed over time, whose altarpiece has been restored; beside it stands a cruceiro, like the one that accompanies the peto de ánimas of Santa Mariña de Escornabois, in the same municipality.
Trasmiras Limia floodplain
Nature
Wetland of some 1,400 hectares shared with Xinzo de Limia that was left isolated after the draining of the lagoa de Antela, the largest lagoon Galicia ever had. It is one of the last refuges of the waterlogged plain that dominated this comarca until the mid-twentieth century.
