What to see and do in Sarreaus

Sarreaus
Village
Sarreaus is a concello of around 1,070 inhabitants in the comarca of La Limia, in the province of Ourense, descending from the heights of the Serra de San Mamede, to the north, down to the fertile plain of the Limia depression, crossed by the river Limia, which rises on Mount Talariño. Settled in the castrexa period by the Límici, it preserves Roman remains with tributes to Trajan, Hadrian and the local god Bandua. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Terra da Limia, from which the Romanesque church of Codosedo survives, and in the early modern period its parishes were divided among the jurisdictions of the Count of Monterrei, the Count of Lemos and the Order of Santiago; the present-day concello was not created until 1835. Its name comes from the Latin Sarrianus, “those who come from Sarria”, after the medieval resettlement.
Romanesque church of Codosedo
Monument
A medieval church in the parish of Codosedo, one of the few Romanesque traces in this municipality of nine parishes, constituted as a municipality in 1835 out of the old districts of Codoselo, Lodoselo and Cortegada.
Acobillo de Roufeiro
Curiosity
An Early Bronze Age settlement dated between 1800 and 1500 BC in the parish of Nocelo da Pena; the municipality also holds the Pedra Alta menhir, which marks the boundary with Vilar de Barrio and Xunqueira de Ambía.
Source of the Limia River
Nature
The river that orders the whole comarca, identified by the Romans with the Lethes or river of oblivion, rises in the parish of Paradiña, where the Serra de San Mamede to the north meets the Limia depression that opens out to the south.
The Sierra de San Mamede in Sarreaus
Nature
The concello is divided between the slopes of the Serra de San Mamede, to the north, and the depression of A Limia, to the south. That contrast between hill and fertile bottomland explains the scattered settlement of its nine parishes.
The carnival table of Sarreaus
Food and drink
The rural carnival of the concello rests on the pig slaughter: cocido with pig's head, lacón and turnip tops, and afterwards orellas and filloas. It is the food that orders the calendar in the nine parishes during the weeks of entroido.
