What to see and do in Castrelo do Val

Castrelo do Val
Village
Castrelo do Val is a concello in the comarca of Verín, in the southeast of the province of Ourense, located in the transition zone between the Manzaneda-Serra de Queixa massif and the Támega valley, with fewer than a thousand inhabitants and one of the largest municipal areas in the province. Its relief drops steeply from the north, where the foothills of the massif exceed 1,200 metres, down to the southwestern depression, between 400 and 500 metres; the Camba river, the main tributary of the Támega in the municipality, is dammed in the das Portas reservoir. In 2011 a resident found on a family estate the so-called Warrior's Stela, a petroglyph more than 3,000 years old, later transferred to the Provincial Archaeological Museum and the only find of its kind in Galicia. The concello includes part of the do Invernadeiro nature reserve.

Reservoir of as Portas
Nature
A reservoir that dams the river Camba in the upper sector of the municipality, among peaks exceeding 1,200 metres; its waters bathe one of the least populated areas of the province, with fewer than a thousand households in the whole concello.
Sogral Hill
Nature
At 1,369 metres it is the highest point of the concello, ahead of Peña Nofre, at 1,291, and Cabeza de Valdefeira, at 1,288; from these summits the Camba runs down towards the As Portas reservoir.
Church of Santiago de Campobecerros
Monument
Parish church of the hamlet of Campobecerros, in the highlands of the concello through which the variant of the Camino Sanabrés passes; the municipality also preserves several stone crosses, the largest in Pepín.
The summit of Valdefeira
Nature
Summit of 1,288 metres in the mountain of Castrelo do Val, neighbour of Peña Nofre and of the Cabezo do Sogral; from these heights the river Camba descends towards the das Portas reservoir, on the boundary with the Sierra de San Mamede.
