What to see and do in A Rúa

A Rúa
Village
A Rúa is a concello of Ourense on the banks of the Sil, in the heart of Valdeorras, whose name comes from the Latin via ruga, “a road between houses.” Forum Cigurrorum, the eighth staging post on the Roman Vía Nova between Braga and Astorga, once stood within its boundaries; it crossed the Sil by the ponte da Cigarrosa, near which a stele with a Roman inscription was found, now kept in the church of Santo Estevo. In Visigothic times a mint operated here, striking coin under the reigns of Viterico, Sisebuto and Suintila, between the years 603 and 631. After the Muslim invasion, the Agarenes were expelled by Alfonso I of Asturias in the mid-8th century, and until the early modern period the town kept the name of Santo Estevo. It now has about 4,200 inhabitants.
Forum Cigurrorum
Curiosity
This territory was home to Forum Cigurrorum, the eighth way station on the Vía Nova between Braga and Astorga and the capital of the Cigurri people, whose memory lives on in the Roman remains scattered across the Sil valley.
Church of Santo Estevo da Rúa
Monument
A parish church that guards a quartz tablet with a Roman inscription, one of the epigraphic pieces documenting the imperial presence in the Sil valley and its connection with the road of the Vía Nova.
Reservoir of San Martiño
Nature
The Encoro de San Martiño is a dam built in 1956 by Dragados y Construcciones on the river Sil, between the Valdeorras concellos of A Rúa and Petín, with a small part in the district of Quiroga; it now belongs to Iberdrola. It is 25 metres high and 125 metres long, holds back about 10 cubic hectometres of water and its tail reaches 1.7 kilometres. On the A Rúa shore, the power company planted a poplar wood to protect the bank from flooding, today turned into a recreational area. The reservoir created a wetland of great ecological interest which in the 1980s came to record more than 1,800 wildfowl, as well as storks and kingfishers.
Church of San Xoán de Roblido
Monument
Parish church of Roblido, one of the three parishes of A Rúa together with the capital and San Xulián; it stands on the slope that looks towards the San Martiño reservoir, on the course of the Sil.
Mountain range of os Cabalos
Nature
Ridge that closes the A Rúa valley to the north, with heights such as Lagoa Grande, of 1,242 metres, Pincheira and A Torrenta; it separates the Sil basin from the highlands of the Terra de Trives.
