What to see and do in Larouco

Larouco
Village
Larouco is a concello in the province of Ourense, in the comarca of Valdeorras, set in a mountainous massif between the municipalities of Rúa, Petín, El Bollo and Manzaneda, already in Ourense, and Quiroga, in the province of Lugo. Its relief combines the mountains of As Bacarizas, with the Alto do Figueiro as its peak at 861 metres, the peneplains of Seadur and Freixido, and valleys carved by the Sil, Bibey and Jares rivers between 500 and 700 metres; the vegetation mixes chestnut trees with Mediterranean species such as rockrose, thyme, rosemary, cork oaks and olive trees. It has barely 440 inhabitants and an almost Mediterranean climate, with only 700 millimetres of rain a year. It grows godello, mencía and merenzao, and the Roman Vía Nova crossed its slopes by the Codos de Larouco.
Castros of Larouco
Nature
The municipality, of barely 23.69 square kilometres, preserves three pre-Roman fortified settlements, O Castro, O Castrillón and Castro Cabanelas, in a territory that the Roman road of the Vía Nova would later cross.
Olive trees of Larouco
Curiosity
The olive was grown here for centuries, favoured by an oceanic-Mediterranean climate of warm summers with an average of 22 degrees in July and August and barely 700 millimetres of rain a year, although its cultivation has been retreating.
The god Larouco
Curiosity
The municipality's name comes from a Celtic deity worshipped in these mountains before the Roman conquest, one of the few pre-Roman god names that survive as the name of a municipality anywhere in Galicia.
Church of Santa María de Larouco
Monument
Parish church of the capital of Larouco, a concello of four parishes wedged between the canyons of the Sil, the Bibei and the Xares, whose name comes from the pre-Roman deity Larouco.
Bends of Larouco
Curiosity
Extremely winding stretch of road XVIII of the Antonine Itinerary, which overcame the sharp drop of the canyon by means of bends; it is one of the best examples of Roman road engineering in Galicia.
Oil from the olive trees of the Sil
Food and drink
The centuries-old olive trees that grow on the sunny slopes of Larouco, above the canyon of the Sil, gave oil for domestic consumption for centuries; their recovery is recent after decades of abandonment.
