What to see and do in Muíños

Muíños
Village
Muíños is a concello of Baixa Limia, in the province of Ourense, situated between the valleys of the Limia and Salas rivers, in the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés natural park, twinned with the Portuguese Peneda-Gerês. The das Conchas reservoir gives the village a river beach 500 metres away, next to which pools of thermal water at 50 degrees well up, taking around thirty years to surface; hiking and canoeing round out its rural tourism offer. Also preserved is the Pazo de los Texada, a manor house with an attached chapel, a coat of arms and a splendid dovecote among its farm buildings. Every first weekend of August the Festas das Sopas do Burro Cansado are held, famous throughout the province. It has around 1,400 inhabitants.
Casota do Foxo dolmen
Nature
A dolmen in the Maus de Salas necropolis, one of the best-preserved megalithic sites in southern Ourense; it shares its setting with the Anta Casiña da Moura, on a plateau now partly taken up by the reservoir.
Casiña da Moura dolmen
Nature
The second of the dolmens of the Maus de Salas necropolis; its name refers to the mouras, the female figures that Galician oral tradition places guarding treasure inside megalithic monuments.
Hermitage of a Clamadoira
Monument
A chapel beside the As Conchas reservoir whose feast day falls on 8 July; the municipality, with its seat at Mugueimes since 1997, brings together twelve parishes spread between the Limia and Salas valleys.
Reservoir of Salas en Muíños
Nature
The encoro do Salas is a reservoir built on the river Salas, in the municipality of Muíños (Ourense), inaugurated in 1971. Together with the das Conchas reservoir it occupies a large part of a municipality of 109 square kilometres situated at 680 metres above sea level, within the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés natural park. Its waters also reach the neighbouring municipality of Calvos de Randín and, on the other side of the border, the Portuguese parish of Tourém, in the municipality of Montalegre.
Las Conchas reservoir river beach
Nature
A stretch of sand laid out on the shore of the Limia reservoir, with thermal pools close by; the same basin that works as a beach in summer covers the Roman camp on the Bande shore in winter.
Outeiro de Cavaladre necropolis
Curiosity
A group of burial mounds in the parish of Requiás, with the megaliths catalogued as M1 and M5; together with those of Maus de Salas they make this municipality one of the richest in megalithic remains in the Baixa Limia.
Festival of as Sopas do Burro Cansado
Activity
It is held on the first weekend of August around a traditional dish of bread soaked in red wine with sugar, whose name refers to the pick-me-up once given to beasts of burden.
Church of Santa María de Cados
Monument
The parish church of Cados, one of the twelve parishes of Muíños; the concello brings together a very dispersed settlement in which each hamlet preserves its church, its hórreos and its mills beside the rivers of the Limia.
Church of San Pedro de Muíños
Monument
The parish church of the hamlet of Muíños, which gave its name to the municipality; beside it stands the castro of San Pedro de Muíños, one of the four fortified settlements catalogued in the municipal district.
Hillfort of Taboadela
Nature
A fortified settlement of the parish of Barxés, one of the four castros catalogued in Muíños together with those of Outeiro de Cela, San Pedro de Muíños and Santa María do Castro, in Guntumil.
Pilgrimage of a Clamadoira
Activity
A pilgrimage festival held every 8 July at the hermitage of the Clamadoira, above the das Conchas reservoir; the residents climb in procession to the sanctuary and extend the day with a picnic on the shore of the water.
The transfer of the municipal seat to Mugueimes
Historical milestone
In 1997 the concello moved its capital to the settlement of Mugueimes, better connected and more populated than the village of Muíños that gave the municipality its name, a move rare among Galician councils.
Festival of o galo que pica no chan
Activity
A tasting held on the first Saturday of August in Muíños, alongside the festival of the sopas do burro cansado; the name alludes to the cockerel raised loose in the yard, the basis of the stew served to those attending.
