What to see and do in O Valadouro

O Valadouro
Village
O Valadouro is a municipality of around 1,800 inhabitants occupying the valley of the Ouro river, wedged between the Serra do Xistral and the coast, within the Mariña Central comarca; its capital is Ferreira, and its 110 square kilometres preserve numerous Neolithic mámoas (burial mounds) and hillforts. The sites of Chao da Cruz and As Penas do Carballido have yielded thousands of flint and quartz tools that place human presence here as far back as the Palaeolithic. Near the source of the Ouro river, in the heart of the Serra do Xistral, the Pozo da Onza waterfall drops about 15 metres, and from the peak of Cuadramón, the highest point in the comarca, the whole Mariña can be seen.
Dolmen of Santo Tomé
Nature
Also called Arca do Padorno, it preserves the capstone over four orthostats and a chamber 2.30 by 1 metre, with a passage facing east; it is attributed to the farming and herding communities of the Neolithic.
Waterfall of o Pozo da Onza
Nature
One of the waterfalls that drop from the Xistral range towards the Ouro valley, along with those of Torez and Escouridal; the municipality thus gathers some of the falls with the greatest accumulated drop in the province.
Ouro River
Nature
The Ouro river rises in the Sierra del Xistral, in the parish do Pereiro, at 700 or 800 metres above sea level, and flows through the municipalities of O Valadouro, Alfoz do Castrodouro and Foz over some 30 kilometres before reaching the ría de Fazouro; along its course it receives the Guilfonso, which forms the fervenza do Escouridal, and marks the natural boundary between O Valadouro and Alfoz do Castrodouro, known as the Val do Ouro. Its banks and estuary are protected as a special area of conservation; in the upper stretch rapids, clear waters and common trout abound, while towards the valley it widens into meanders, still stretches and pools, and in its lower part, in the parishes of Santo Acisclo and Fazouro, the sea trout that swims up the river from the ría to spawn can be fished.
Prado das Chantas
Curiosity
An oval enclosure marked out by some 250 driven granite blocks, of disputed date and purpose: a prehistoric cromlech, a ceremonial setting or simply a medieval livestock enclosure have all been proposed.
Church of Santa María de Ferreira
Monument
The parish church of Ferreira, capital of the concello since its constitution and a villa since 1894; it presides over the settlement that brings together the services of the ten parishes spread across the valley of the Ouro.
The heights of Cadramón
Nature
A pass that in the parish of O Cadramón crosses the sierra and connects the valley of the Ouro with the flat lands of the interior of Lugo; its slopes of heath and peat bog belong to the massif of the Xistral.
Paleolithic site of O Chao da Cruz
Nature
An open-air station where thousands of worked lithic pieces have been collected, together with the neighbouring one at Penas do Carballido; they document human presence in the valley of the Ouro long before megalithism.
The granting of town status to Ferreira
Historical milestone
The regent María Cristina granted Ferreira in 1894 the status of town, recognizing its role as head of the Ouro valley and as market for the ten parishes that make up the concello of O Valadouro.
Honey Fair of O Valadouro
Food and drink
A fair held in October in Ferreira that brings together the valley's beekeepers with their honeys and by-products, alongside seasonal chestnuts and apples; it closes with a magosto and traditional music.
