Village
Cervo is a coastal municipality in the province of Lugo, in the Rías Altas of the Mariña Occidental comarca, which in 2025 had 4,137 inhabitants following the independence of the parish of Burela in 1994. The Cobo river, which passes beneath the old medieval bridge of O Bao, flows into the port of San Cibrao, one of the earliest whaling ports on the Cantabrian coast and home today to Galicia's oldest maritime museum. In the 18th century, that same port shipped out material from the Old Royal Foundry and Pottery Works of Sargadelos, the foundry that the Marquis of Sargadelos built in 1794 and which went on to bring worldwide fame to its ceramics; remains of those facilities are preserved in the site's historic-artistic complex, next to the church of Santiago de Sargadelos.
Monument
In 1791 Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez founded here, by royal charter, an ironworks to smelt cast iron, and in 1806 he added a fine earthenware factory in the Bristol manner, the first of its kind in Spain. The complex was declared historic-artistic in 1972.
Monument
The seat from which the Royal Factories were run, part of the historic-artistic complex declared in 1972 along with the dam, the Antiga Fábrica de Louza, the Casa do Peso, the Camiño Real and the Ibáñez palace.
Monument
The parish church that gives its name to the parish where Ibáñez set up his factories at the end of the 18th century. It forms part of the Sargadelos historic-artistic complex declared in 1972, along with the cemetery and the Camiño Real.
Nature
A riverside path that follows the River Xunco among mills and waterfalls in the parish of Sargadelos. It is included in the historic-artistic complex declared in 1972 around Ibáñez's Royal Factories.
Monument
It is the oldest public sea museum in Galicia, housed in San Cibrao in a school building from 1931. It was born in the summer of 1969, when the schoolteacher Francisco Moisés Rivera Casás turned the old school, together with his pupils, into a museum devoted to the seafaring life of the Lugo coast, and it was established as a public body in 1994, then run by the Asociación de Veciños Cruz da Venta; in 2006 it was brought into the Rede Museística Provincial of the Diputación de Lugo, which has managed the building since the Cervo town council handed it over in 2004. Its rooms cover the original school, traditional ribeira boat carpentry and the shipyards of San Cibrao, active since the 15th century, the trades of the sea and the history of whale hunting; admission is free.
Monument
Despite the name it was not a fortress but an old salting factory beside San Cibrao; its remains recall the town that between the 14th and 15th centuries built caravels and salted fish on the Cantabrian coast.
Activity
The Festa da Maruxaina is held every second Saturday of August in San Cibrao, in the municipality of Cervo, as a popular thanksgiving for all that the sea provides. According to legend, facing the village there is a castle beneath the water where a mermaid lives who, some say, warns sailors and frees them with her wisdom from the sea's harsh weather, while others say she bewitches them so that they lose their way and spend the rest of their days there. Carried by the sailors with sails and lanterns to do Torno beach, the Maruxaina is subjected to a popular trial that always acquits her: the village grants her pardon and the festival continues with a large queimada, ending in the village square.
Monument
An eighteenth-century seigneurial house raised by Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez, marquis of Sargadelos and promoter of the factory complex in the neighbouring parish; today it houses the town hall of the concello of Cervo.
Monument
A stone bridge of medieval origin over the río Cobo, included among the historic heritage of the concello of Cervo; it crossed the channel on the road that linked the ports of the coast with the inland territories of the Mariña.
Monument
A lighthouse set on the point of A Atalaia, at the end of the peninsula of San Cibrao; it marks the entrance to the fishing port and commands the inlet where every August the legend of the Maruxaina is enacted.
Nature
The Illas dos Farallóns are a small archipelago in the municipality of Cervo (Lugo), visible from the promenade of the port of San Cibrao and a refuge for seabirds; the ancient Greeks already knew them as Trileucos. They are formed by three islets -A Sombriza, A Baixa and O Pé-, of rugged, rocky terrain totalling six hectares, and they have been the scene of several shipwrecks, such as those of the steamer María del Carmen F in 1931 or the cargo ship Castillo Moncada in 1945. In a cave on A Sombriza, the largest of the islands, tradition places the dwelling of the Maruxaina, the mermaid who gives her name to the festival celebrated every second Saturday of August.
Nature
A mass of Atlantic woodland on the lower stretch of the río Trasbar, at the southern limit of Cervo, with an old chapel hidden among the trees; it is one of the best preserved remnants of fraga on the coastal strip of the Mariña.
Curiosity
Wooden shipbuilding workshops of the port of San Cibrao, noted as the only ones surviving in the province of Lugo; they continue the tradition of a port where caravels were already being fitted out in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
Activity
A market of crafts and local produce set up in the praza do Souto, in the settlement of Cervo; it brings together traditional trades of the Mariña in the same concello where the Sargadelos ceramics were born.
Historical milestone
Decree 368/1994 authorised the separation of the parish of Burela from the municipal district of Cervo to constitute a municipality of its own, number 314 in Galicia; the process had begun at a residents' assembly held in 1992.
Historical milestone
Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez set the blast furnaces of Sargadelos going, the first integrated ironworks in Spain, fuelled with charcoal; in 1794 he added a munitions factory that supplied the Navy.
Activity
An event devoted to the sea urchin that has been held in San Cibrao since 1992 between the end of February and the beginning of March, in the middle of the product's season; it was declared a festival of tourist interest in Galicia in 2008.
Food and drink
A collective ritual on the Saturday following 16 August: after a theatrical performance the spirit is set alight, the incantation is recited and it is shared out among those attending. Declared a festival of tourist interest in Galicia in 2001.
