Festival of a Maruxaina Activity · Cervo, Mariña Occidental, Lugo Image of Cervo, not of the place itself. The Festa da Maruxaina is held every second Saturday of August in San Cibrao, in the municipality of Cervo, as a popular thanksgiving for all that the sea provides. According to legend, facing the village there is a castle beneath the water where a mermaid lives who, some say, warns sailors and frees them with her wisdom from the sea's harsh weather, while others say she bewitches them so that they lose their way and spend the rest of their days there. Carried by the sailors with sails and lanterns to do Torno beach, the Maruxaina is subjected to a popular trial that always acquits her: the village grants her pardon and the festival continues with a large queimada, ending in the village square.
