What to see and do in Val do Dubra

Val do Dubra
Village
Val do Dubra is a rural municipality of A Coruña province, with about 3,700 inhabitants, situated twenty kilometres from Santiago de Compostela, with which it is connected by the CP-0701 road. Its name comes from a Celtic root, dubron, meaning water, the same root that gives its name to the Asturian river Dobra and to similar place names in France, England or Germany. The territory lies in a valley flanked by Mount Castelo, at 569 metres, from whose heights, and from the alto do Picoto in the parish of Rial, the whole val can be seen. It preserves the Portomouro bridge over the Tambre and the pre-Romanesque chapel of Novais. Its coat of arms, approved in 2009, shows on waves of silver and azure a sarcophagus crowned by a ray of light and a six-pointed star.
Bridge of Portomouro
Monument
A 19th-century crossing over the River Tambre made up of three large equal arches flanked by two smaller ones, standing at a notable height above the water; for centuries it was the natural link between Compostela and the lands of Bergantiños.
Tambre River
Nature
A Galician river of the Atlantic slope that rises in the Sobrado lagoon, at 510 metres above sea level, near the hamlet of la Porcariza, in the municipality of Sobrado, and gathers the waters of the Fontevirtude and Rodelo streams. It runs 125 kilometres southwest, crossing twenty municipalities - among them Val do Dubra - with a basin of 1,531 square kilometres, before flowing into the Ría de Muros e Noia through the Langaño inlet. Its main tributaries are the Dubra, the Barcala, the Maruzo, the Samo and the Lengüelle. Its middle and upper reaches and its estuary are declared a Special Area of Conservation.
Pre-Romanesque chapel of Novais
Monument
Small temple or oratory dated between the ninth and tenth centuries, with ashlar walls and narrow openings, linked to the vanished monastery of Novalis; it is one of the few pre-Romanesque testimonies left standing in the rural surroundings north of Santiago de Compostela.
Church of Santa María de Paramos
Monument
A thirteenth-century Romanesque parish church, with a doorway of archivolts and an ashlar chevet, accompanied by a cruceiro in the atrium, one of the several catalogued within the concello.
Mount Castelo
Nature
A summit of 569 metres, the highest in the concello, crowned by the remains of an early medieval fortress. From it one commands the Dubra valley and a good part of the upper basin of the river Tambre.
Summit of the Forca
Nature
An elevation of 530 metres which, together with the hills of Boiro, closes off to the south a concello of gentle relief furrowed by the Dubra; its slopes preserve heaths and patches of Atlantic oak wood.
Stone of the Man
Curiosity
A group of anthropomorphic tombs cut into the rock, with the outline of the body carved into the stone; they are attributed to the Suevic or early medieval period and are among the few of this type in the comarca of Santiago.
Festival of o Emigrante de Val do Dubra
Activity
Celebration convened every summer since 1984 in homage to those who left for America and Europe and to their descendants, in a concello that lost much of its population in the migratory waves of the twentieth century; a sculpture raised that same year recalls the diaspora there.
Galician grelos (turnip tops)
Food and drink
Tender turnip shoots covered by a protected geographical indication, sown in autumn in the gardens of the concello and gathered in winter to accompany lacón, caldo and cocido.
