Village
Boimorto is a municipality of about 1,800 inhabitants in the comarca of Arzúa, in the province of A Coruña, located in an area of undulating relief whose highest peak, the coto das Amieiras, reaches 773 metres, in the mountains of the Bocelo; its territory, favourable to agriculture and livestock farming, is divided between the basins of the Tambre and Ulla rivers. From the castro period it preserves two 1st-century castros, that of Dormeá and that of las Corredoiras, and from Romanisation a 3rd-century milestone survives, found in 1989 at the site of Vilanova, beside the secondary road that linked Braga with Astorga. With a dairy and forestry economy, the Camino del Norte passes through its territory. It preserves the Romanesque church of Santa María de Sendelle and hosts the Festival da Luz, promoted by the singer Luz Casal.
Monument
A Romanesque church of the end of the 12th century beside the Camino del Norte, of which the apse survives with twelve corbels of geometric and plant motifs; the nave was enlarged in the 18th century and its presbytery holds 16th-century wall paintings.
Monument
A parish church of Romanesque root whose façade was rebuilt in neoclassical style in the 19th century, a very common contrast in rural Galicia, where the medieval fabric survives behind centuries of successive alterations.
Monument
A 16th-century manor house in the parish of Dormeá, surrounded by a wall and with a dovecote of its own; its façade displays the coats of arms of the Castro and Ulloa lineages, which dominated much of these lands of the A Coruña interior.
Monument
A manor house in the parish of Andavao (Boimorto, Arzúa), known as the Torre de Andavao even though it is not actually a tower but a large house. Restored, it preserves a carved coat of arms on the main façade and is today a regular residence; it is one of the examples of fortified houses that once dotted the territory of Boimorto along the medieval routes to Santiago.
Monument
A 17th-century gentry house in the parish of Sendelle, now privately owned, recognisable by the semicircular arch of its gateway and by the sobriety of the granite ashlar typical of rural seigneurial architecture.
Nature
The Tambre, which rises in the Sobrado lagoon, crosses Boimorto forming the Ponte Castro fishing preserve; its banks of alder and willow make up one of the busiest trout stretches in the interior of A Coruña.
Curiosity
A 16th-century group of paintings that came to light in the church's presbytery: the Last Supper runs along the lower part of the apse and the Last Judgement covers the vault; it was restored in two phases, between 2002 and 2003, by Marién González Añón.
Curiosity
A large tile factory that was in operation until the 1990s and has been refurbished as evidence of the municipality's pottery tradition, a trade that gave work to dozens of local people for much of the 20th century.
Curiosity
A 3rd-century milestone found in the municipality and kept today in the town hall, its inscription still legible; it is the most tangible evidence that a Roman road once crossed this country between the Tambre and the Ulla.
Activity
The Festival da Luz is a charity music event organised on the initiative of the singer Luz Casal, a native of Boimorto, with the collaboration of her home municipality. It is held over three days in summer in the parish of Andavao, with a spirit closer to a romería than to a conventional festival, open to any kind of music. The first edition, in 2012, brought together more than five thousand people and the proceeds went to the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, although a storm warning forced the cancellation of the second day's performances. In later editions it has raised funds for causes such as neuromuscular diseases, Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam Intermón, and oncological research at Compostela's Oncomet, with sponsors such as Estrella Galicia and the SGAE.
Nature
The 82.71 square kilometres of the concello extend at some five hundred metres of average altitude with no outstanding summit, a landscape of gentle hills, hay meadows and forestry plantations.
Activity
The Festival de la Luz is a charitable and festive musical gathering organised on the initiative of the singer Luz Casal, born in Boimorto (A Coruña), with the collaboration of her home council. It is held at the end of August in the parish of Andavao over three days, and its entire proceeds are given each year to a different charitable cause, from the fight against cancer to Médecins Sans Frontières or oncological research projects. Born of an old idea of the artist's to pay tribute to rural Galicia, it held its first edition in 2012 with more than five thousand attendees, and has since grown with the support of sponsoring companies and the town council to bring together dozens of Galician and other Spanish musical groups in a municipality of barely two thousand inhabitants.
Curiosity
The concello keeps a competition of cantares de Reis, the tradition of going round the houses singing from door to door on the night of Epiphany, today turned into a contest between parish groups.
Activity
The Northern route crosses the concello on its way to Arzúa, where it joins the French one. In 2018 some 19,000 pilgrims passed along this stretch, a notable figure for a municipality of a little more than two thousand residents.
Historical milestone
A milestone of that century confirms that the lands of the concello were crossed by Roman roads. Along with the castros of the first century, it documents a continuous occupation from before the Romanisation.
Food and drink
The economy of the concello rests on dairy cattle, which supply the cheese dairies covered by the Arzúa-Ulloa denomination of origin. Boimorto figures among the municipalities included in its production zone.
