The first document mentioning the settlement as such dates from 1185. Within its territory stand the ruins of a castle of Arab origin, El Espechel, a witness to the medieval resettlement of the Tajo valley; the area belonged to Talavera until its incorporation into the province of Cáceres in 1833.
