What to see and do in Hoyos

Hoyos
Village
Municipality of 848 inhabitants (2025), 15 km² and 514 m altitude. On August 29, 1809, French troops murdered the bishop of Coria here. The whole town was declared a conjunto histórico in 2024. It is home to the Consejo Regulador (Regulatory Council) of the 'Gata-Hurdes' olive oil Designation of Origin. The church of Nuestra Señora del Buen Varón (12th-13th centuries) preserves a Baroque altarpiece attributed to José Benito de Churriguera.
Hoyos, Conjunto Histórico
Village
The historic centre of Hoyos was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Conjunto Histórico in June 2024, for combining mountain vernacular architecture with buildings of noble and palatial character. Its history is linked to the ducal house of Alba and to having been a summer retreat for the bishops of Coria in the early modern era.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Varón
Monument
15th-16th-century church that preserves remains of an earlier late-Romanesque structure, with Gothic doorways, reused Roman stelae and an octagonal pyramidal tower. The historic centre is arranged around it, among the Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza Mayor and Plaza Gabriel y Galán ("el Coso", a former bullfighting arena).
