What to see and do in Villamiel

Villamiel
Village
Municipality of 379 inhabitants (2025), 73 km² and 744 m altitude, which once had around 1,862 inhabitants in the mid-19th century. It includes the village of Trevejo, with its medieval castle. The church of Santa María Magdalena preserves 17th-century granite inscriptions on death and the passage of time.
Castillo de Trevejo
Monument
Fortress whose origin goes back to before the 12th century, when a Muslim fortress stood on the site and was later rebuilt. It passed through the hands of the Orders of the Temple, Saint John of Jerusalem, Santiago, and finally Alcántara. It was destroyed during the War of Independence to prevent its use by guerrilla fighters. It is protected under the blanket declaration of the Decree of April 22, 1949 and under Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage, and it appears on the Lista Roja del Patrimonio (Heritage Red List) in Spain due to its ruined condition.
El Cristo Negro de Villamiel
Curiosity
Carving of a dark-skinned Christ venerated in Villamiel, which local tradition attributes to having been brought by a soldier who fought in Flanders.
Saqueo de Villamiel durante la guerra de Restauración portuguesa
Historical milestone
In 1665, in the midst of the Portuguese Restoration War, Villamiel and neighbouring Valverde del Fresno were sacked. The municipality, which had belonged to the province of Salamanca, became part of the new province of Cáceres after its creation in 1833.
